Bachelor of Arts in Humanities

The Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Humanities at the University of Eswatini is a four-year undergraduate degree that provides a broad foundation in the humanities, focusing on culture, language, history, literature, and related fields. It is designed to prepare students for careers in education, culture-based sectors, research, public service, civil society, and further postgraduate study.

There are two main ways to study it:

  • Full-time on campus at the Faculty of Humanities.
  • Distance Education mode (IDE) through the Institute of Distance Education (for flexible learning).

 

CORE FOCUS AREAS

Students typically choose two (2) subject majors from across humanities disciplines. Common academic areas include:

  1. English Language & Literature
  2. African Languages & Literature
  3. History
  4. Theology & Religious Studies
  5. Geography, Environmental Science & Planning

This means your degree can be tailored to your interests—for example, a combination like:

  • English Language & Literature + History or
  • History + Geography, Environmental Science & Planning or
  • English Language & Literature + African Languages & Literature etc…

 

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

To be eligible for full-time study in the B.A. Humanities programme, you generally need:

  • A minimum of six subject passes in SGCSE/IGCSE/GCE O-Level or equivalent.
  • A C grade or better in any two of the following subjects:

 

  • English Literature
  • History
  • Geography
  • French
  • Religious Knowledge
  • SiSwati (or another language)

Note: If you want to take Geography or Environmental Planning as a subject, you must also have a C grade or better in Mathematics.

 

There is also a Mature Age Entry Scheme if you are 22+ and meet special criteria — this is an alternative way into the programme if you don’t meet standard qualifications.

For distance mode through IDE, the entrance requirements are similar, but they may include additional conditions based on the Institute’s regulations.

 

DURATION & STRUCTURE

Duration: 4 years for full-time study.

The curriculum typically includes general academic skills courses (e.g., Academic Communication Skills, ICT basics, HIV/AIDS awareness) alongside your major subjects.

Students focus on their selected majors through progressive levels of study, building analytical, critical thinking, and communication skills.
